Emergency Exit Doors: An Essential Safety Component in Building
An emergency exit, also known as a fire door, is a vital component in any building. Management must ensure the presence of an emergency exit, typically designed as a fire-resistant door made of metal and constructed with specific materials and designs to ensure safety.
In emergency situations, people often experience panic, so an emergency exit must be designed for maximum efficiency. In fact, this component is regulated under Indonesian Regulation No. 36 of 2005, Article 59. Let’s take a closer look at the importance of emergency exits!
The Importance of Emergency Exits in Multi-Storey Buildings
Every multi-storey building is required to have a metal emergency exit door. It must be easy to open so that even in a state of panic, people can still operate it quickly. Beyond that, it also serves several crucial functions:
1. Facilitates the evacuation process
During a fire, people inside the building will panic and rush to get out at once. A fire door is essential to support this evacuation process, as the main entrance alone cannot accommodate everyone simultaneously.
Moreover, the main door is not designed to withstand fire conditions. On the other hand, a metal emergency exit is specifically built to meet safety standards during a fire. Its bright color makes it easy to spot in the midst of chaos, allowing evacuation to proceed faster, more efficiently, and safely.
2. Minimizes material losses
A fire door is designed to withstand flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building. As we know, fire departments often need time to reach the location of a fire.
A well-constructed fire door helps contain the fire while waiting for firefighters to arrive. If the flames can be contained, important documents and assets can be saved, thereby minimizing financial losses caused by the incident.
3. Prevents loss of life
Quick evacuation during a fire significantly reduces the risk of casualties. Furthermore, since fire doors can hold back flames for a period of time, occupants have a greater chance to escape to the assembly point safely.
Ideal Criteria for an Emergency Exit
Although it may look simple to the untrained eye, an emergency exit cannot be built carelessly. It must be made using specific materials and installed according to strict regulations to ensure functionality and safety. Below are the ideal criteria for a fire door in a building:
Fire resistance
A fire door must be made of materials capable of withstanding fire for at least two hours. It should include a section of fire-resistant glass positioned at the upper half and coated in red paint. The door must also be equipped with hinges, an automatic closer, and a handle for quick evacuation.
Ground floor regulation
On the ground floor, the emergency exit must lead directly outside. It should be accessible from a corridor within a distance of 25 meters or less, ensuring easy access for occupants.
Multi-storey building regulation
Multi-storey buildings must have emergency exit doors at least 100 cm wide. In such buildings, emergency exits should lead directly to the emergency staircase, as elevators are unsafe to use during fires or other emergencies. These exits thus become the primary evacuation routes.
Separated from other rooms
Buildings with more than three floors must have at least two emergency staircases located no more than 45 meters apart. These routes must be separated from other rooms to ensure that evacuation paths remain safe and free from fire hazards.
Additionally, every building must have clearly visible exit signs that remain illuminated even during a power outage, helping people find their way to safety amid panic.
